On September 6, 2012 Grgich Hills celebrated the 36th annual blessing of the grapes. In setting the stage for these blessings, Mike shared with us some insight about how passion, jealousy, and romance come together in the creation of bouquet.
He tells us that when blending different single vineyard varietals takes place, a marriage has begun, and is consummated as if in a honeymoon suite that lasts for at least a year. With a twinkle in his eye, this ninety-year old hero of the wine industry, confesses that he is jealous of his wine because when he was married, the honeymoon was only a week long. When he looks in on the wines in their honeymoon suite, he sees a lot of passion going on. As in all affairs of this sort, this is when flavors, aromas, and bouquet arise in the presence of the oak barrels, evolving the wine into a new entity. This is how a world-class food-friendly wine is created. It is Mike Grgich's model by which he strives to create a perfect wine, which he admits has yet to happen, but he has great hopes for the future. We should all share with him in his optimism.
